An Introduction to the Geometrical Stability Index: A Fabric Quantity

Natural soils are often modelled as a continuum characterized by the composition of soil, particulate material. Yet, in situ, fabric and structure soil may govern its behavior. Discrete element modelling is used to simulate material develop quantities. These quantities presented average for volume particles. It possible use DEM study evolution at particle level. This paper describes state-of-the-art term, referred geometrical stability index, ʎ, which can measure contacts deviation each from most stable arrangement during loading. The parameters required define this new term were attained designed algorithm. 2D discrete method (DEM) biaxial test simulations performed validate effectiveness index defining local instability. As sample loaded, shear band formed. geometric that increases relative surrounding relatively intact soil. Thus, brittle failure associated with an increase variation inter-particle configuration. able model development discontinuities results demonstrate correlations between progressive localized densified systems such over consolidated clay, where function fissure spacing.
